Full-ride scholarships are extremely rare.
"My niece Ashley got a full ride merit scholarship at Princeton . . ."
Truth is
. . . of the students enrolled full time at four-year colleges in the 2007-08 school year, only 0.3 percent (be sure you read that right: not 3 percent but 0.3 percent) received enough money to cover the full cost of attendance . . . . . . in 2012 of the 14,000 students enrolled as freshman in all the Ivy's, fewer then 10 students received any non-need based aid from the schools. Private scholarships are only a small part of the pie.
"6.6 billion in scholarship money went unclaimed last year."
The most common form of this myth asserts that $6.6 billion in scholarships went unclaimed last year. This myth is based on a 1976-77 academic year study by the National Institute of Work and Learning, which estimated that $7 billion was potentially available from employers in the form of employer tuition assistance, but that only about $300 million to $400 million was used each year.
